Mold - Facts and Myths

You hear a lot about mold these days.  You know the black or green blotchy stuff
you may have seen on your bathroom ceilings, walls, or around shower tiles. Or maybe you have possibly smelled a musty odor in your house or your friend or neighbor's home.  Molds are everywhere, especially here in South Florida where the climate is warm and humid.

Take Mold Very Seriously

Mold should be taken seriously as it can be harmful to your health, and some people are more sensitive and can have adverse reactions. Also, there is a potential legal liability with regard to resale of homes that may contain mold. The reason so much attention has been focused on mold the last five years is because of all the lawsuits that have been generated regarding mold.

The mold known as “Stachybotrys Chartarum or Stachybotrys Atra has received the most publicity because it is more commonly found in building materials and therefore more frequently present in homes. There are different views on whether this type of mold is more harmful than other molds.

There are a few basic precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate molds. Venting bathrooms, adding insulation to reduce condensation, fixing leaking pipes, using de- humidifiers, and using your air conditioning.  If you do have any type of water damage, you should have the damage professionally inspected and repaired immediately to avoid further mold that can grow behind walls and ceiling areas that you cannot see.
