Boca Raton's City Summer Camps – What You Need to Know

Are you stressing out because you still haven't found something for your kids to do during the summer? Worried that you're going to be stuck hiring an expensive nanny to take care of your children while you work?

Thankfully, Boca Raton is looking out for you as the city provides official budget-friendly summer camps to all residents for children from first to eighth grade. Whether you're looking for a summer-long traditional summer camp or a more subjectively focused summer “program”, you'll find what you're looking for from Boca's wide array of publicly available summer activities.

The Traditional Camp is a 6 week long camp filled with about 3 field trips per week and countless fun activities, starting June 18th and extending until July 27th. There is the Traditional Camp, which is for children grades 1 through 5, and there is the 'Tween Camp for grades 6 to 8, so don't feel these are only for young kids. There are 3 weeks of extended camps available for an extra fee, and a Traditional Plus Camp that offers a field trip every single day for maximum fun. Of course, the Traditional Plus Camp also costs about $100 more per child.

If you're on a tight budget, don't anticipate needing supervision all summer, or just want to give your child some chill time at home, there are also week by week camps of the same style available. If you're going the week-by-week route, why not also take a look at some of Sugar Sand Park's Summer Programs? They're each a week long and focused on one subject, including:

Video Production

Claymation

Make Your Own Music Video

Theater Performance

Dancing

Robotics

Juggling

Business Training (It's called Billionaire Boot Camp, and it's a blast!)

Survival

And many more...

Remember, these camps are here for your kids just as much as they're here for you; your youngsters will love attending just as much as you love dropping them off. The city of Boca Raton actually offers several different summer camps that all fit this description: you drop your campers off on your way to work by 7:30 AM and you pick them up on your way home at 5:30 PM. It couldn't be more convenient.

No matter what your supervisions needs are this summer, you'll want to be sure to check Boca Raton's city website for a full list of camps, times, ages and costs. Don't deprive your kids of a fun and active summer instead of a boring, lonely one spent at home playing video-games. You and your kids deserve to make the best of these precious few summer months, and there's no better way to do that than through Boca Raton's super fun and convenient summer camps.

Activities Offered by the City Parks and Recreation Department

Boca Raton has been described as a “Mecca” for outdoor enthusiasts and it certainly lives up to its name. But there are dozens of other available activities to suit every taste. Perhaps one of the most important venues for finding a variety of activities offered at reasonable prices is the Boca Raton Department of Parks and Recreation. This department offers events and activities that will appeal to different age groups. The Department of Parks and Recreation runs three community centers within the city, including the Boca Raton Community Center. This center sponsors literally hundreds of classes throughout the year. Some of the classes are geared towards adults, and some towards children. It’s impossible to cite the whole list of activities, but a representative sampling should suffice.

Many Boca Raton adults enjoy playing bridge and other card games. The center offers three levels of bridge instruction: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. After the instructional period, class members get to put what they have learned into practice by playing a few rounds. Instruction is continued during this play. The classes last for two hours and are offered for eight weeks. Unusual classes like woodturning are also offered. Lathes, tools and other materials are provided. Class members make several things including a box, bowl and candlestick. The classes last for eight weeks, three hours per class.

Dog obedience classes are especially popular and fill up fast. There’s a beginner dog obedience class and Intermediate one and Intermediate two. There’s also a puppy kindergarten for puppies ten weeks old to five months old. It emphasizes housebreaking, walking on a leash, and discouraging biting and chewing. Initially the dogs are taught basic commands and then can graduate to agility exercises.

There are also many classes for people who have a particular interest such as learning sign language or those who want to learn about “The Top Twenty Secrets of Great Singers: Their Mindset and Methods.” This class teaches those who aspire to be musical performers the musical and non-musical techniques involved in a memorable performance. And for those interested in fitness, there are a myriad of activities: Yoga at the Beach, Tai Chi, Trim Weight Control, and Judo.

There are also a plethora of children’s classes. An abridged list would include: violin, archery, baton twirling, pom-poms, tumbling, yoga kids, Bieber Fever (singing, acting and dancing), Musical theater, Mommy and Me Music for Toddlers, and Broadway Superstars. There are also several types of dance programs emphasizing creativity, rhythm and coordination. And a special boon to working parents, there’s a summer camp program for children in grades one through eight that runs for six weeks. As can be seen, the programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department are plentiful. Don’t see anything you like? Check out their website. There’s sure to be something that will appeal to you!

Opportunities for Higher Education in Southeast Florida

For those seeking to change careers or enhance their economic prospects, there are many opportunities for higher education in the southeast Florida region. Boca Raton is home to one of the larger universities in the area, Florida Atlantic University (FAU). This school opened its doors in 1964, thereby becoming the fifth university in the state university system. FAU’s main campus is in Boca Raton, but it also has six satellite campuses throughout southeast Florida. The University’s total enrollment is 29, 000 students; 4,000 of those students live on the main campus in Boca Raton. All the other students commute and many of them are part-time. The University is an upper-division school that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. There are over 170 degree programs including seventeen doctoral programs. There’s such a variety of programming that there’s almost sure to be one that will suit each student’s needs.

In addition to Florida Atlantic University, there are several other higher educational facilities within easy driving distance of Boca Raton. Palm Beach Atlantic University is a private school with 3, 663 students. It offers fifty undergraduate majors and several graduate degrees in areas such as family counseling and business. Nova Southeastern University has its 300-acre main campus in Fort Lauderdale. Over 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in the school. It offers a variety of programs, including: law, education, business, psychology, computer science, oceanography, pharmacy, optometry, dental medicine and osteopathic medicine.

Devry University is also located in Fort Lauderdale. The school offers-master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees, and various non-degree programs and courses. Both graduate and undergraduate degrees are offered in several areas of business and accounting. Associate’s degrees can be obtained in fields like electroneurodiagnostic technology and systems network administration.

There are also several specialty schools that can be found in the southeast Florida region. ITT Technical Institute has campuses in Deerfield Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. As most people know, the school emphasizes business and technical courses. There is also a Cordon Bleu Culinary School that offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Management. An associate’s degree can also be earned in Le Cordon Bleu Hospitality and Restaurant Management. In addition, there are numerous nursing degree programs throughout the southeast Florida region.

This is just a partial list of the higher educational opportunities that are available in the Palm Beach-Broward corridor. Anybody who is interested in furthering his education should check out the Internet. There’s sure to be a college or university that offers a program of study that will suit most individual needs. Learning a new set of skills, or enhancing established skills, is within reach in southeast Florida.

Palm Beach County Schools

Boca Raton is located in Palm Beach County, and is serviced by its countywide school system. The Palm Beach County School District educates almost 173,000 pupils each year. Its facilities include 164 elementary, middle and high schools. It is the fifth largest school district in the State of Florida and the eleventh largest school district in the United States. It has over thirty charter schools that offer parents and students an alternative to traditional educational programs. It also has several magnet schools that offer specialized programs in science, math, technology, visual arts, performing arts, communication arts and international studies. The district makes every effort to provide diverse educational environments so that individual student talents and abilities can be encouraged.

Class size in the core content areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies) is constitutionally limited in the State of Florida. There can be no more than eighteen students in Kindergarten through fourth grade, no more that twenty-two students in grades five through eight, and no more than twenty-five students per class in high school. To ensure that these limits will not be exceeded, the Palm Beach County School District hired over 500 new teachers for the 2011-12 school year. Fortunately, the district has been diligent about renovating existing schools and building new schools when necessary (ninety-one schools have been renovated or built since the year 2000). Hence there was available classroom space for these new teachers. As smaller class size is typically associated with improved student performance, the students of Palm Beach County should reap significant benefits from this situation.

The public school system in Palm Beach County also sponsors a virtual school that is available to students in grades six through twelve. The virtual school features on-line courses that are taught by certified, full-time instructors. These teachers are available throughout the day to conference with students and parents and provide assistance.

In addition to the public school system, Palm Beach County is also home to over 130 private schools. Some of these private schools are religiously affiliated and some of them are non-denominational. So as can be readily seen, Palm Beach County has a variety of educational institutions available to meet the needs of school age children. To find out more about a particular school in Palm Beach County, visit the internet – each school in the county has its own website. The Palm Beach County School District website also provides a plethora of information.
