Boca Raton's City Summer Camps – What You Need to Know

Are you stressing out because you still haven't found something for your kids to do during the summer? Worried that you're going to be stuck hiring an expensive nanny to take care of your children while you work?

Thankfully, Boca Raton is looking out for you as the city provides official budget-friendly summer camps to all residents for children from first to eighth grade. Whether you're looking for a summer-long traditional summer camp or a more subjectively focused summer “program”, you'll find what you're looking for from Boca's wide array of publicly available summer activities.

The Traditional Camp is a 6 week long camp filled with about 3 field trips per week and countless fun activities, starting June 18th and extending until July 27th. There is the Traditional Camp, which is for children grades 1 through 5, and there is the 'Tween Camp for grades 6 to 8, so don't feel these are only for young kids. There are 3 weeks of extended camps available for an extra fee, and a Traditional Plus Camp that offers a field trip every single day for maximum fun. Of course, the Traditional Plus Camp also costs about $100 more per child.

If you're on a tight budget, don't anticipate needing supervision all summer, or just want to give your child some chill time at home, there are also week by week camps of the same style available. If you're going the week-by-week route, why not also take a look at some of Sugar Sand Park's Summer Programs? They're each a week long and focused on one subject, including:

Video Production

Claymation

Make Your Own Music Video

Theater Performance

Dancing

Robotics

Juggling

Business Training (It's called Billionaire Boot Camp, and it's a blast!)

Survival

And many more...

Remember, these camps are here for your kids just as much as they're here for you; your youngsters will love attending just as much as you love dropping them off. The city of Boca Raton actually offers several different summer camps that all fit this description: you drop your campers off on your way to work by 7:30 AM and you pick them up on your way home at 5:30 PM. It couldn't be more convenient.

No matter what your supervisions needs are this summer, you'll want to be sure to check Boca Raton's city website for a full list of camps, times, ages and costs. Don't deprive your kids of a fun and active summer instead of a boring, lonely one spent at home playing video-games. You and your kids deserve to make the best of these precious few summer months, and there's no better way to do that than through Boca Raton's super fun and convenient summer camps.

Public Parks in Boca Raton, Florida

Individuals who live in the “snow belt” are used to being cooped up all winter; one of their primary reasons for moving to Florida is the spectacular weather that occurs day after day – all four seasons! The Boca Raton area has a lot to offer those who want to make the most of our beautiful weather. Outdoor activities are abundant and readily available to those who choose to move here. There is golf, tennis, nature walks, and all sorts of water activities. The State of Florida in general, and Boca Raton in particular, have been diligent about keeping public parklands for its residents to enjoy. The parks in Boca Raton offer a multitude of activities. Or, if someone just wants to go to a park, relax, and enjoy nature, that’s possible, too.

Red Reef Park is a popular destination in the Boca Raton area. Snorkelers are especially enamored of this park, because there’s a man-made reef about ten feet off shore. This reef is appropriate for snorkelers of all skills levels to explore. The park also offers swimming, sunbathing, surfcasting, and walking the boardwalk to enjoy the natural environment. There’s also a designated surfing area on the south end of the beach.

South Beach Park is a twenty-four acre park with one half a mile of beachfront. This park is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing or beach walking. There’s also surfing permitted on the south end of the park beach. Fishing is allowed outside the swimming area. South Beach Park also features rest rooms, showers, and (best of all!) a lifeguard on duty between the daytime hours of nine to five. This is extremely important to families with young children and those who come to the park to swim alone.

Another lovely Boca Raton park is South Inlet State Park. It’s located on the Boca Raton inlet. It offers a variety of activities like sightseeing at the pier, fishing, sail boarding, windsurfing, jet skiing, canoeing, and kayaking. It also features other facilities like a volleyball area, a children’s playground area, picnic tables with grills, restrooms and public showers.

Still another beautiful park is located about six miles from the center of Boca Raton – Delray Municipal Beach. This park encompasses a 7,000-foot beach and offers swimming, surfing, volleyball, sailing, windsurfing and snorkeling. There are also two recreational areas for activities like kite flying, throwing Frisbees, and paddleball. Cabana, umbrella, sailboat, sailboard and kayak rentals are all available. There’s a lifeguard on duty during the day from nine to five. So if your plan is to move to Florida, know that there will be plenty of ways to enjoy the beautiful weather in the Boca Raton area.

Activities Offered by the City Parks and Recreation Department

Boca Raton has been described as a “Mecca” for outdoor enthusiasts and it certainly lives up to its name. But there are dozens of other available activities to suit every taste. Perhaps one of the most important venues for finding a variety of activities offered at reasonable prices is the Boca Raton Department of Parks and Recreation. This department offers events and activities that will appeal to different age groups. The Department of Parks and Recreation runs three community centers within the city, including the Boca Raton Community Center. This center sponsors literally hundreds of classes throughout the year. Some of the classes are geared towards adults, and some towards children. It’s impossible to cite the whole list of activities, but a representative sampling should suffice.

Many Boca Raton adults enjoy playing bridge and other card games. The center offers three levels of bridge instruction: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. After the instructional period, class members get to put what they have learned into practice by playing a few rounds. Instruction is continued during this play. The classes last for two hours and are offered for eight weeks. Unusual classes like woodturning are also offered. Lathes, tools and other materials are provided. Class members make several things including a box, bowl and candlestick. The classes last for eight weeks, three hours per class.

Dog obedience classes are especially popular and fill up fast. There’s a beginner dog obedience class and Intermediate one and Intermediate two. There’s also a puppy kindergarten for puppies ten weeks old to five months old. It emphasizes housebreaking, walking on a leash, and discouraging biting and chewing. Initially the dogs are taught basic commands and then can graduate to agility exercises.

There are also many classes for people who have a particular interest such as learning sign language or those who want to learn about “The Top Twenty Secrets of Great Singers: Their Mindset and Methods.” This class teaches those who aspire to be musical performers the musical and non-musical techniques involved in a memorable performance. And for those interested in fitness, there are a myriad of activities: Yoga at the Beach, Tai Chi, Trim Weight Control, and Judo.

There are also a plethora of children’s classes. An abridged list would include: violin, archery, baton twirling, pom-poms, tumbling, yoga kids, Bieber Fever (singing, acting and dancing), Musical theater, Mommy and Me Music for Toddlers, and Broadway Superstars. There are also several types of dance programs emphasizing creativity, rhythm and coordination. And a special boon to working parents, there’s a summer camp program for children in grades one through eight that runs for six weeks. As can be seen, the programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department are plentiful. Don’t see anything you like? Check out their website. There’s sure to be something that will appeal to you!

Antique Shopping in Palm Beach County

As most people know, Boca Raton is located in Palm Beach County. And as many people also know, Palm Beach County is home to some of the wealthiest people in the United States. Because of this, the antique business in Palm Beach County is booming. Antiques are typically considered a luxury item. Perhaps it’s because of this fact that antiques represent wealth and status among the upper echelons of our society. So antique stores, hoping to turn a profit, make sure that there is always a steady supply of antiques to appeal to the sensibilities of their wealthier clients. It also should be remembered that when clients wish to dispose of antique pieces, they often end up in antique stores in the Palm Beach area. This means that many beautiful “treasures” can often be found in these stores.

So, where should the resolute antique shopper begin? Dixie Highway’s famous “Antiques Row” is as good a place as any. Over forty shops are located on this easily accessible stretch of highway. There are elite shops like the Elephant’s Foot where antiques may be pricy, and thrift stores like The Animal Rescue League Thrift Shop and Gulfstream Goodwill. There truly are stores that service the full spectrum of shoppers (and their wallets!).

There are also specialty antique shops located in Palm Beach County. For instance, Harris Kratz specializes in neoclassical furnishings from 1790 to 1990; Galere specializes in twentieth century decorative art and furnishings. Boca Raton also boasts several antique specialty shops. At “Antiques and Country Pine, “ it’s possible to find superb pieces of porcelain, jewelry, glass, bronze and art. In addition, the shop offers free appraisals and holds frequent auctions. This past March 31, 2012, the store held an auction featuring “fine decorative arts and Chinese works.” This auction, like all their auctions, was open to the public. A catalogue is always available to preview what will be sold at a particular auction.

Billed as the “South Florida's largest antiques mall,” Hillsboro Antique Mall and Café is located in Pompano Beach, just south of Boca Raton. The mall is housed in a 35,000 square foot facility, and over 250 antique dealers can be found there on a daily basis. The mall is open seven days a week, and is a prime destination for antique shoppers from all over south Florida. If a shopper wishes to receive advance warning about specials, she can sign up to receive a newsletter from the mall via email.

Once a month, there’s also a huge antiques show at the South Florida Fairgrounds. There are often more than 400 dealers in attendance. And in February of each year, the International Fine Art and Antique Fair is held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. There are a number of other antique shows that are too numerous to mention. The antique shopper will always find something to arouse his interest in the Palm Beach County antique market!

The Boca Raton Resort and Club

If you need a place to stay while house hunting in the Boca Raton area, there are numerous options. And for those who want to combine house hunting with a vacation, hotels and resorts near the beach are plentiful. Perhaps the best-known resort in the Boca Raton area is the Boca Raton Resort and Club. This Mediterranean style club has a long history in the Boca Raton area, and is arguably the most recognized structure in southeast Florida. The original building was completed in 1926 and was designed by prominent architect, Addison Mizner. There have been several renovations and additions since that time, and today it is a sprawling structure that sits on 365 manicured acres.

The resort boasts 1,043 rooms that are decorated in five different styles and located in distinct wings. Each room is equipped with at least one flat screen television. For families requiring more space, fifty-eight suites are available. There are also 76 junior suites and a few bungalows. Many of the guests stop at the resort in order to partake of Florida History. They come to stay in the carefully preserved, Spanish-style Cloister wing. Some patrons are so enamored with this experience that they make a yearly trek to the resort.

Of course, there are so many activities that guests usually don’t spend much time in their rooms. The resort offers two golf courses, seven swimming pools, a full service marina, deep-sea fishing charters, three gyms, thirty tennis courts, and a private beach. To facilitate guest convenience, there is a shuttle service that runs throughout this enormous complex. Concierge service is always available and there is a childcare facility on the premises. Every effort is made to ensure that each guest’s stay is a memorable one.

For those who enjoy fine dining, the resort offers eleven restaurants. Each restaurant has a distinct ambiance and emphasizes different types of food preparation. There is truly a restaurant to suite every guest’s unique tastes. And for those who want to partake of some nightlife, there are eight bars within the complex. There are also literally hundreds of restaurants and bars within easy driving distance of the resort. And the Palm Beach County area is jam-packed with activities and special events throughout the year. A resident or traveler never has to want for something to keep him occupied.

So, when you search for that “dream home” in the Palm Beach County area, remember to check out the Boca Raton Resort and Club. You can have a dream vacation, while looking for that dream home!

Palm Beach County Schools

Boca Raton is located in Palm Beach County, and is serviced by its countywide school system. The Palm Beach County School District educates almost 173,000 pupils each year. Its facilities include 164 elementary, middle and high schools. It is the fifth largest school district in the State of Florida and the eleventh largest school district in the United States. It has over thirty charter schools that offer parents and students an alternative to traditional educational programs. It also has several magnet schools that offer specialized programs in science, math, technology, visual arts, performing arts, communication arts and international studies. The district makes every effort to provide diverse educational environments so that individual student talents and abilities can be encouraged.

Class size in the core content areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies) is constitutionally limited in the State of Florida. There can be no more than eighteen students in Kindergarten through fourth grade, no more that twenty-two students in grades five through eight, and no more than twenty-five students per class in high school. To ensure that these limits will not be exceeded, the Palm Beach County School District hired over 500 new teachers for the 2011-12 school year. Fortunately, the district has been diligent about renovating existing schools and building new schools when necessary (ninety-one schools have been renovated or built since the year 2000). Hence there was available classroom space for these new teachers. As smaller class size is typically associated with improved student performance, the students of Palm Beach County should reap significant benefits from this situation.

The public school system in Palm Beach County also sponsors a virtual school that is available to students in grades six through twelve. The virtual school features on-line courses that are taught by certified, full-time instructors. These teachers are available throughout the day to conference with students and parents and provide assistance.

In addition to the public school system, Palm Beach County is also home to over 130 private schools. Some of these private schools are religiously affiliated and some of them are non-denominational. So as can be readily seen, Palm Beach County has a variety of educational institutions available to meet the needs of school age children. To find out more about a particular school in Palm Beach County, visit the internet – each school in the county has its own website. The Palm Beach County School District website also provides a plethora of information.

Unique Palm Beach County Events

Boca Raton is conveniently located in Palm Beach County. And Palm Beach County, as many people are aware, offers some of the most unusual and entertaining activities available in South Florida. Consider, for instance, two popular attractions that take place in nearby Wellington, Florida.

The first occurs every year, from January through April. Those are the months of the polo season in South Florida. The game of polo used to be the preserve of only the rich and famous. Even the spectators were from the upper echelons of society. All that has changed, however. Now, during the first four months of every year, families can attend these entertaining matches every Sunday. Yes, there are still private boxes and reserved seating available, but general admission seating can also be purchased – at quite reasonable prices. There are lots of tailgating parties for those who want to make a day of it. Attendees can choose to watch the action live outside or on several closed circuit televisions that are strategically placed inside a large pavilion arena. Inside, complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres are served, and a full brunch can be purchased on Sundays. In addition, there are several restaurants to choose from, including gourmet fare in the Paddock Restaurant as well as lighter offerings in the Deli, Terrace Restaurant and Trophy Room Restaurant. Most people have never even attended a polo match, but once they have experienced the fierce action that ensues in these medium and high-level goal matches, attendance at the International Polo Club in Palm Beach becomes a Sunday ritual.

The Equestrian Festival also takes place in Wellington each January through April. This famous horse show features both hunter and dressage classes. It is one of the oldest and longest (it lasts twelve weeks each year) horse shows in the United States. Riders from all over the world bring their horses to compete. The purses are generous, and this attracts some of the best horsemen in the world to the South Florida region. Even Olympians regularly compete in the show. There are also children’s classes, which help to make this an experience the whole family will enjoy. The Equestrian center covers 140 acres so there is plenty of parking and places to picnic or tailgate. As can be seen, Boca Raton provides a convenient gateway to some of the most interesting attractions available in the South Florida region!

Mizner Park is a Boca Raton "Gem"

Mizner Park is a beautifully renovated mall in Boca Raton. It’s an outdoor mall that takes full advantage of the temperate Florida climate. The architecture is a striking Mediterranean Revival. There’s a lush, tropical atmosphere with fountains and decorative walkways. Many people come to the mall to just enjoy a stroll or sit and relax on one of the outdoor benches. Of course, many others (especially the women) come to shop!

Mizner Park is home to many shops and boutiques. There are stores that cater to those interested in women’s apparel, accessories, jewelry, men’s apparel, shoes, housewares, pets, and children’s apparel. Chain stores are represented as well as boutiques that carry many one-of-a-kind items. Some of the stores even offer goodies to munch on while you shop. Speaking of munching, Mizner Park also offers thirteen eateries. Family friendly Ruby Tuesday’s is there as well as upscale Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. There are thirteen eating-places in all, offering such diverse fare as Mexican, Italian and Irish foods.

The Boca Raton Museum of Art is also housed at Mizner Park. As its name implies, it features prominent works of art by local, regional and even international artists. Antiques are also spotlighted at the museum. And if a traveling art show is coming to town, it’s likely to be found at the museum in Mizner Park. Outdoor concerts are also held in a large amphitheater in Mizner Park. In April alone there will be a free concert by the Lynn University philharmonic, an annual Easter in the Park worship service, and the Boca Bacchanal Grand tasting event. This fun affair includes wine tasting and sampling foods from several local restaurants. Be sure to arrive early, as it can get crowded!

And as if that’s not enough, Mizner Park also boasts rental apartments. There truly is something for everyone at Mizner Park. So for all your shopping, epicurean and entertainment needs, check out Mizner Park. You won’t be disappointed!

There's a Restaurant to suit every palate in Boca Raton

There are a plethora of restaurants to choose from in Boca Raton. There’s Chinese, barbecue, South American, Thai, fusion, Japanese, German, Turkish, Indian, Greek, French, Vietnamese, and Italian. The list goes on and on! And that’s just the immediate Boca Raton area. Within a twenty-five mile radius, there are even more varieties to be found. No one ever has to crave good food in South Florida. It’s usually only a stone’s throw away! And if you ever want to get a sense of how popular and reasonable many of these restaurants are, check out the parking lots during the early bird special time slots (usually between 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.). Excellent food at reasonable prices obviously appeals to many people!

The immediate Boca Raton area hosts such nationally recognized chains as P. F. Changs, The Cheesecake Factory, Capial Grille, Morton's, and T. G. I. Friday’s. Many people enjoy the delicious fare offered at these nationally popular restaurants. Most restaurants in the region, however, do not belong to chains. They are privately owned, local restaurants that cater to individuals who enjoy fine food. The Dubliner Irish Pub is one such restaurant. It’s located in Mizner Park, an open-air mall. It’s possible to eat inside in the attractively decorated pub or outside in the attractive Florida weather. It’s your choice. And if you eat outside, Fido is welcome to accompany you. In fact, “man’s best friend” may be served some water and a choice morsel before you’re served! The Dubliner serves Irish food at reasonable prices. It represents casual family dining at its best.

For the health or weight conscious, there’s Season’s 52. At this trendy restaurant, there are no meals over 475 calories. Full nutritional information is available. The restaurant is particularly famous for its flat bread pizzas. People come from miles around to partake of these tasty, healthy “indulgences.” There are also a variety of desserts. They are served in tall shot glasses and clock in at about 250 calories each. There’s not even a need to feel guilty!

As can be seen, there truly is a Boca Raton restaurant to suit every palate in the greater Boca Raton area. So check out the Internet, talk to acquaintances, or look in the newspaper and other regionally produced publications. You’re sure to find a restaurant that tickles your fancy in Boca!

Boca Raton is the Place to Live!

The population of the Boca Raton area is growing because people want to take advantage of all Southeast Florida has to offer. Four miles of white-sand beaches, multi-purpose trails, numerous shopping centers and restaurants, thirty-one parks, three community centers, three tennis centers, several world-class golf courses, two libraries and two public pools are only some of the amenities Boca Raton has to offer.

In addition, housing for all income levels is plentiful and well priced. There are many middle and upper middle class neighborhoods, as well as exclusive neighborhoods catering to those who can afford the best money can buy. Both new homes and resale homes are still abundant. Interest rates are at historical lows. Because the national housing market has been depressed in recent years, home prices are still lower than usual. There are many excellent buys to be had, but the prudent buyer will act quickly. It is the general consensus that housing prices in some areas of Southeast Florida are beginning to rise again. The recession in the housing market appears to be near or at its end. Those individuals who are savvy enough to take advantage of the low interest rates and low home prices just might be able to purchase the home of their dreams!

Economic opportunities in Southeast Florida are also abundant. Employment can be found in many different sectors, and large companies like Bank of America, Staples, IBM, Home Depot, and ADT frequently post job openings. The tourist industry is also strong and offers multiple chances for employment in retail sales, hotels, restaurants and the entertainment industry. Taxes are low – property taxes and local sales taxes are below national averages. And there is no state income tax!

And let’s not forget the most important benefit of living in Southeast Florida – the year around beautiful weather! The statistics tell the story. 75 F is the average temperature. 83 F is the average annual high and 67 F is the average annual low. The sun shines most days of the year. It may rain on some days, but typically it passes quickly and the sun returns. A magnificent sunset can almost always be observed on the western horizon. Some might indeed say that Boca Raton has it all!
